What Is Therapy?
If you’ve never been in therapy before, you may have questions about what to expect. Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, is a collaborative process where clients speak with a therapist about concerns that prompted them to seek services. These sessions take place in a private and non-judgmental setting, with a focus on identified goals and objectives specific to each individual. Therapy can support individuals who are experiencing difficult emotions, painful memories, or unresolved issues, as well as those seeking to improve emotional awareness, strengthen relationships, or gain deeper personal insight. It allows space to examine patterns, thoughts, behaviors, past experiences, and current situations in order to support desired change.
What Happens at the Initial Session?
The first session helps establish the working relationship between therapist and client. Expectations are discussed, rapport begins to form, and both parties collaborate on a plan. This initial assessment typically lasts between 53 and 90 minutes, depending on whether it is an individual or couples session.
Follow-up Frequency and Duration
- Frequency:
Most sessions occur once per week, though this may vary based on circumstances. The appropriate frequency will be reviewed during the initial visit. - Duration:
Follow-up sessions, whether individual, group, or couples, generally last between 53 and 90 minutes. Timing depends on identified concerns and what is agreed upon after the first appointment.
Expected Length of Service (ELOS)
Therapy is voluntary and can continue as long as it remains useful. Duration varies by individual needs. When the therapist and client agree that the objectives outlined in the treatment plan have been met, the process will begin to wind down. At that point, clients are encouraged to reflect on progress, highlight key insights, and prepare for ongoing personal care after therapy ends.
